“The curse of climbing is discovering how great the distance yet to climb.”

― Steven Erikson, Gardens of the Moon

Meliora is Latin for “ever better.” Most would think this a positive word. The drive to constantly improve is generally seen as an admirable one. But what exactly does that mean, to be better?

For many, the constant quest to improve degenerates into an unceasing series of comparisons to others. But this is a journey that will never end. Someone will always be prettier, or more skilled, or richer. And even if you do manage to reach the absolute acme of whatever it is you’re chasing, then what? Will you have “attained” lasting satisfaction? No. Might as well try to catch a wave in a bucket.

Constantly looking upward is liable to give you a sore neck. Instead, try looking within. Find satisfaction in the day-to-day. If you have trouble doing this, perhaps a change is in order. This moment is all we ever really have—the past gone and the future yet to come—so we might as well enjoy it.
